NUSA DUA – Badak LNG has agreed to collaborate with PT PLN (Persero) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with PT PLN (Persero) to supply energy needs to support the innovation promoted by Badak LNG. The signing was carried out on the second day of The 4th International Convention on Indonesian Upstream Oil & Gas (IOG) held by SKK Migas at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center on 20-22 September 2023, carried out by the President Director & CEO of Badak LNG Gema Iriandus Pahalawan and General Manager of PT PLN (Persero) Main Distribution Unit for East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan, Joice Lanny Wantania, witnessed by the Deputy for Exploitation of SKK Migas, Wahju Wibowo.
Gema Iriandus Pahalawan, President Director of Badak LNG, said that in facing the challenge of continuing to improve energy efficiency, this time Badak LNG is trying to innovate by focusing on reducing energy use for the steam turbine which functions as a driver for the refrigerant compressor in the refinery, where this equipment is the heart of every LNG plant.
Badak LNG seeks to make the first breakthrough in an LNG plant throughout the world. The breakthrough was made by reducing energy use from steam obtained from combustion in boilers that use fuel gas. The steam turbine will be replaced with a variable speed motor to drive the refrigerant compressor using electrical energy supplied from PLN with a total power of 160 MVA. “Our team has conducted an initial study of this effort. This innovation is very challenging and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding today is an important first step for Badak LNG and PLN to carry out a joint study to ensure this program is feasible and profitable for both parties. Both from technical, safety, environmental and economic aspects as a form of our commitment to supporting the long-term vision of SKK Migas. This is also in continuity with our energy efficiency program which is managed in the ISO 50001 Energy Management System. This step is an ambitious step for our team at Badak LNG,” said Gema in his statement, Saturday (23/9).
This modification to use the refrigerant compressor drive is not only aimed at achieving the energy efficiency target of 35MMSCFD, this can also increase LNG production and will increase plant thermal efficiency. So it also supports the national goal of optimizing energy resources.
Meanwhile, Joice said that PLN Kaltimtara is committed to providing a reliable power supply for Badak LNG.
“PLN is committed to providing the power supply needed for Badak LNG. Our current electricity supply system in Kaltimra itself still has a power surplus of 300-400 MW. So it is very possible to supply power to the Badak LNG plant. After this signing ceremony, we hope that both parties can transfer data as a study of this breakthrough. In the future, we will also build 11 power plants from renewable energy, which is in line with the government’s vision of realizing sustainable energy,” explained Joice.
In its mature age, Badak LNG is committed to continuing to make breakthroughs, modernize and collaborate to achieve sustainable goals in the energy industry. This is in line with aspects of sustainable development goals (SDGs) point 7 concerning affordable and clean energy, namely the use of energy that is efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly, as well as point 9 concerning industry, innovation and infrastructure, namely encouraging sustainable innovation.(RI)
